The Noam Chomsky Lectures

Darren Barefoot

The Noam Chomsky Lectures (Coach House) is a table play. For two hours Daniel Brooks and Guillermo Verdecchia sit behind a table and wage war on the Canadian Government and Big Business. With the aid of a slide projector, they offer up and critique various Chomskyesque political and cultural subjects, Toronto-area theatre critics and the Gulf War being two easy targets. The authors are not without. dramatic device. One favourite prop is the art stick, which renders the performer silent when he "crosses the fine line between art and demagoguery." It is a line both playwrights often skirt. Regardless, this play makes for thought-provoking reading and is an effective primer into the fascinating, tangled world of Noam Chomsky.
