Lynx

Kevin Barefoot

Attention, Joyce Nelson fans: we no longer need to scan the contents pages of Canadian Forum and the Georgia Straight for her astute essays on culture. In June 1996, Nelson started publishing Lynx, a Monthly Newsletter in the Public Interest from James Bay on Vancouver Island, and she already has readers in six provinces. My favourite section is "CONRAD Watch" where we are reminded that the man who now controls 58 of Canada's 104 daily newspapers (through Southam) may soon control the (Southam) news service that feeds the other 46. Lynx asks: "Has your local paper been CONRADed? What changes were made in personnel, style, coverage, bias, etc.?" Send your observations and examples to Lynx, P.O. Box 39012, James Bay Postal Outlet, Victoria, B.C., V8V 4X8. Subscriptions are $30 for the waged, $18 for students and the unwaged.
