Comic Book: The Movie

Comic books take something back from Hollywood in Comic Book: The Movie (Miramax), directed by none other than Luke Skywalker, aka Mark Hamill, and starring him and most of the best voice talent in the animation industry. The film, a fictional documentary about Hollywood adapting a comic book for film, has its charms, including Hamill’s best performance ever. He is earnest, honest and convincing in his role as Don Swan, a forty-something comics lover who tries to subvert the Hollywood studio adapting (he would say destroying) his beloved comic hero. Even better, this DVD has it where it counts: extra features. Included in the two-DVD set are sample drawings faked for the movie, full-length interviews with Kevin Smith, Stan Lee and (my favourite) Bruce Campbell, all of whom play themselves in the movie. Perhaps the best extra feature of all, though, is footage of the voice talent responsible for some of the best characterizations in years, all on stage together during a San Diego ComiCon. The genius in these never-seen actors is palpable, and the audio commentary track with Hamill and this gang of lunatics makes the Comic Book DVD experience tons of fun.
