Chuck Dugan is AWOL

Kris Rothstein

The eponymous hero of Chuck Dugan is AWOL by Eric Chase Anderson (Chronicle) isn’t from Montreal or Toronto but he is struggling through early adulthood in this illustrated old-fashioned adventure story filled with innocence and charm. Chuck Dugan deserts the Naval Academy in order to stop his mother from marrying the evil “Admiral” who wants her money and the hidden treasure left for Chuck by his heroic father. The tale is engrossing, and the accompanying maps and drawings are full of strange and beautiful details. Eric Chase tells a story in which, thank God, something actually happens.
