VIFF: Song of Tomorrow

Kris Rothstein

Song of Tomorrow is not at all terrible, it’s just a bit hard to imagine why Swedish directors Jonas Holmström and Jonas Bergergård spent the time, effort and money to complete this movie. I’ve read that this team has done short films in the past and that makes a lot of sense because this really felt like a good short film that went on way too long. Janos is an easygoing dude and not a totally terrible singer and guitar player. His friend Stig takes his self-imposed job as manager seriously, for example, trying to get the local craft museum to show some ceramic figures a friend has made of Janos. Both men lead rather sad lives, but Janos is satisfied and Stig is not, hence the fantasy of propelling his pal to great fame. This should have been a dry, funny but touching comedy. It has a few good moments but, in general, it did not sustain my interest.

It's playing again October 8th at 7:15pm at the Park Theatre.
