Two Things I Learned After Eating Perogies at the PNE

1. The word “hunky” is considered a derogatory term referring to immigrants from Eastern Europe, and particularly those from Hungary and the Ukraine. A lawsuit was dismissed in 1982 after a British Columbia Human Rights branch ruled that, although offensive, the name “Hunky Bill’s” was legal, and it did not discriminate against Canada’s Ukrainian population of about 600,000, who were free to get their borscht on at any and all of his restaurants (ref: this article from The Ukrainian Weekly, 1982).

2. Hunky Bill invented a perogy maker which (I’m certain must have) revolutionized the perogy-making process for babushkas around the world! It comes in two sizes (Big and Little) and you can buy it on his website: https://hunkybills.com/, which sells exactly three products -- the third being an electronic fly swatter for West Nile protection.

I am already planning my next perogy party, where I will do my 25% Ukrainian heritage proud.
