The Perfect Image

THE EDITORS

1982, the Edmonton Folk Festival. I was photographing everything that moved or sang. I had heard of Stan Rogers before but I’m not sure I’d really HEARD him. That night on the main stage Stan exploded into my consciousness and I, in turn, blasted away with my Nikon. He was a revelation and afterwards I was chomping to get the film back to see what I had. When I saw the contacts there was one picture I knew was perfect, it was so Stan. I blew it up and ... out of focus. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. It went into a box. I went back to that box after he died and, out of focus or not, it was still the perfect Stan Rogers picture. Thanks Stan.
