Taylor Mac’s monologue starts and just about everything he says is funny. The ridiculous hair, makeup and costume (“his finery,” as he describes it) doesn’t hurt and neither does the ukelele. He riffs on contemporary politics, Obama’s election, the war on terror and the trend of news programs which tell us what WILL happen, not what HAS happened. We all need to be prepared for surprise now, he says. But I wasn’t prepared for the surprise of how funny and good Taylor Mac would be. The act can’t be easily categorized — it’s stand-up comedy, drag routine, performance art and theatre of the absurd all rolled into one. This performance is an amalgamation of pieces from many of his past shows but it’s different every time.

Taylor Mac says that his reaction to forced participation at the theatre is: “Fuck you, I don’t want to have fun.” It’s OK when he does it, he says, although the only victims were a man who ended up in a burgundy mylar boa and a woman who posed for a photo op. Some of the songs were a little morose or trite but overall I’d highly recommend the show.
