Three actors. An almost empty stage. A rare openness, candour and lack of artifice. That is what you get at Intimacy, a production from Ranters Theatre in Australia.

I knew little about the show but as it progressed I surmised that the dialogue and scenes that unfolded were the product of conversations with strangers or acquaintances. They have been cut and reframed to give us an insight into humanity and to see what kind of communication and disclosure is possible when we let our guard down.

Most of the show is simple conversation about topics like love and adventure and fear. There are also two active scenes, one involving a man who does performance art dressed as a bird and another about a woman who cannot sleep. These active interludes just heighten the impact of the quieter moment. The show is not flashy but it has a lot of charm and a cumulative effect.

Intimacy plays at the Orpheum Annex until Jaunary 23rd.
