Remember the old expression: "children should be seen and not heard"? Ya, the internet pretty much took the wind out of that sail. Nowadays, it’s free reign for anyone to be seen, heard, tweeted, liked, blogged, stumbled, tumbled or tubed.
Hal Niedzviecki (Broken Pencil) called this phenomenon "Peep Culture" in 2009 when he published his book The Peep Diaries. Now, Sally Blake and Jeanette Loakman of Chocolate Box Entertainment, have partnered with Hal to produce a documentary of the same name that will air on CBC’s The Passionate Eye on Wednesday Feb 16.
“Peep Culture is a one-hour documentary film that is an insightful romp into a world where the internet and reality TV can make you a star. Youtube and Chatroulette are high-speed versions of lost village life, reconnecting the human tribe in the context of a culture that is celebrity and camera obsessed, when we are not so much connecting as “broadcasting”. In the age of peep, the challenge isn’t to protect your private life – but how best to capitalize on it!”
Now for a touch of irony:
