Hellfire and Brimstone

THE EDITORS

We were at a Stan Rogers concert at the University of Maryland in College Park in 1981 or ’82. The audience, while really liking the music, wasn’t overly familar with Stan or his songs. This became obvious when, without any introduction, Stan stood at the microphone in the middle of the stage and roared, “Goddamn them all.” There was a shocked silence in the auditorium until Stan launched into “Barrett’s Privateers.” There seemed to be a great sense of relief that Stan was going to sing to them rather than condemn them all to hell!
