A Letter to Christy Clark Regarding Occupy Vancouver

November 25, 2011

Hi Christy,

So what? It’s been a whole three weeks since you last gave me a reason to be upset with you?

I could be investigating whether or not the CBC bit Peterborough MP Dean Del Mastro when he was a child. Or, to be serious, discussing the fact that there are hundreds of First Nations communities in Canada that have no access to clean running water.

But instead, here I am, writing to you again. Because there a couple of things you might need explained to you.

First off, Occupy Vancouver is a protest movement. You are a politician. You are not supposed to like Occupy Vancouver. If you’re annoyed—if it’s starting to grate on you a little bit, having a bunch of people complaining that you and yours are doing a bad job—then so much the better for the protesters. But no one’s really worried about your feelings. Not even the people who support you. They’re worried about their feelings. Which are probably located in their wallets.

Second: “I think they're ignoring the spirit of the court ruling”? A court ruling is a fucking legality, it does not have a spirit. Or an aura. Or a soul. Or if you want to be figurative, how about the spirit of democracy, or free speech, or the right to a peaceful protest?

I’m going to ignore you for a while now.

Best,

Chelsea Novak
