Thank you for donating issues of Geist to a writing workshop at the Carnegie Centre in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver in March. The course was meant to be a one-off: a four-week workshop to generate submissions for the Harbour Centre Downtown Memory Project, part of the Vancouver Memory Festival. ElJean Dodge and I, both grads of the Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University, led the course. We appreciate the complimentary copies—they gave our writers something to shoot for. Not only were they interested in the examples of flash- and non-fiction, they also found the info on competitions and submissions fascinating. Three of the submissions our class produced were selected and beautifully typeset, matted and displayed in the Teck Gallery at sfu Harbour Centre. It was thrilling to see the participants’ work being read and absorbed—the project really brought home how writing is a concrete endeavour.
