Publishing Strategies for Small Magazines

This one-day seminar-workshop is for publishers and editors of small magazines who wish to explore publishing strategies designed to fit the needs of niche publications.

The session will begin with a discussion of the publishing vision and the subsidy environment for managing small circulation magazines. We will then examine best publishing practices in editorial, circulation and web development.

You will be asked to supply brief summaries of your current publishing aims, and to identify areas of special interest to you.

The format will move between seminar presentations and workshop exercises.

In the morning we will focus on business plans and subsidy models: clarifying the publishing vision and the mission statement; basing a business plan on the subsidy model; and the funding environment.

In the afternoon we will explore publishing best practices: editorial best practices; circulation best practices; and web best practices.

Finally, we will put it all together with some conclusions, recommendations and caveats.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
